nVidia working on 5-core tablets!

We were only just getting used to the idea of dual and quad-core tablets, with few software developers really taking full advantage of the hardware on offer. Despite that, nVidia is prepping a 5-core chip, with the next generation of tablets looking incredibly powerful.

nVidia already had a number of tricks up its sleeve with the Kal-El tablet program. Perhaps the most impressive feature is support for resolutions of up to a staggering 2560×1600 pixels – which should look fantastic on a tiny tablet screen.

We also knew that nVidia was working on quad-core chips – with devices like the Eee Pad 2 likely to be the first beneficiary, but it seems that this is just the start of the project.

nVidia has since admitted that it’s been working on adding a fifth core to the platform, made using a low power silicone process. The idea is that the fifth core will handle low-frequency tasks, including standby modes and media playback, while the other cores will concentrate on different everyday tasks.

Despite this, nVidia is still confident that the 5-core chips will be more power efficient than today’s single-core options, which should be great for battery life.

It’s all looking good for the future of tablets then. Lets just hope that apps developers come up with the goods on the software side of things to take full advantage of the next-gen technology.
