ALL NEW Friday Top 5 Round-Up: Everything I’ve missed out on this week

Brand new feature to the blog is the Friday Round-Up which is where I bring you the Tech news that I’ve missed out on throughout the week. However, obviously not all of it because that would just be impossible!

This week I’m bringing you MeeGo news, a definition and more of the Chrome Zone, a tablet attached to a bicycle, 3D news and an apology from Nikon.

1.

Up first is a goodbye to the MeeGo OS and hello to the Tizen OS.

Announced on Wednesday was a new link-up between Samsung and Intel to build a new OS which meant us saying a goodbye to the current MeeGo OS.

The new project codenamed Tizen OS is based on HTLM5 and similarly like MeeGo  will support multiple devices including tablets, smartphones, smart TVs, netbooks and in-vehicle infotainment systems.

The newbie is expected to be released in 2012 and  “combines the best open source technologies from LiMo and The Linux Foundation."

2.

Now, Google launches Chrome Zone in the UK.

Launched with ‘shop-within-a-shop’ experience at Currys and PC World superstore in London’s Tottenham Court Road is the Chrome Zone ready to sell their one and only Samsung Chromebook.

This is what head of consumer marketing for Google in the UK and Ireland, Arvind Desikan said:

"We've put a great deal of thought into the design of this Chrome Zone."

"Chromebooks are the perfect notebook computers for people who live on the web, and offer a faster, safer and more secure online experience, without all the time-consuming and confusing maintenance required by typical computers."

imageWhilst Mark Slater who is category director at Dixons Retails added:

"Initial customer response to the launch of Samsung's Chromebook has been excellent and we are expecting a lot of customer interest and excitement now it is in-store.

It's the most revolutionary laptop on the market and as the leading electrical retailer in the UK we are thrilled that our flagship store has UK exclusivity to showcase this new technology to our customers.

We have dedicated staff who have been specifically trained in using the Chromebook to demonstrate all its unique benefits and features to customers."

3.

Tablet news now and this one is just, well strange from Samsung.

Would you like to ride your bike with a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 attached to the side? Hmm.

The bike is made from company, 14 Bike Co and comes available in various configurations. Keeping the weight down is the detachable carbon holder allowing you to take the tablet off the holder and use it on the move. Not very safe indeed!

Samsung says:

“Applications such as dashboards tracking mileage, route planners and repair instructions for punctures, can be downloaded from the Android Marketplace to enhance everyday cycling routes or more adventurous trips – a handy addition for any cyclist.”

What about the dirty roads? I certainly I don’t know about you but I wouldn’t like rain, mud or anything else like that splashed at my dazzling Galaxy Tab.

4.

Don’t get on the wrongs side of your social media community!

image

Earlier this week the camera manufacturer, Nikon USA posted a post on their Facebook page which was shared at the last count 1,072 times, commented on 2,703 times and “liked” 1,618 times by the Facebook community of over 840,000 people.

The post read: "A photographer is only as good as the equipment he uses, and a good lens is essential to taking good pictures!" Then asking users to share their favourite Nikon lense.

This caused one big argument indeed with reactions that Nikon were suggesting that a good photograph is not down to the photographer but the equipment. However, a new post was uploaded apologising saying:

"We know some of you took offence to the last post, and we apologise, as it was not our aim to insult any of our friends. Our statement was meant to be interpreted that the right equipment can help you capture amazing images.”

5.

Finally, do you like 3D?

image

A  biased survey taken at this years Disney D23 Expo on behalf of Panasonic proves that out of 500 people quizzed 71% of people said that they see it as ‘dramatically better’ than the good old 2D TV.

Meanwhile, 27% made clear that the 3D experience was ‘fabulous’ and a further 50% said ‘I wish I had this in my home.’

All seems positive which a massive 99% all agreeing that 3D is ‘somewhat better’ than 2D.
