Archos 97 Carbon squares up to Nexus 7 and iPad

I’m out of the office today but here’s your Tech fix though.

Archos 97 Carbon squares up to Nexus 7 and iPad

In what should be an interesting year for tablets, Archos has just announced a new tablet of its own. The Archos 97 Carbon tablet is set to tout the latest Android Ice Cream Sandwich operating system and Google apps. It’s out later this month in a variety of sizes, including a 7-inch model to vie for attention alongside the new Google Nexus 7.

The new Archos 97 Carbon isn’t quite an iPad competitor, but more of an entry-level alternative to some of today’s more expensive tablet computers to tempt those looking for a middle of the road tablet with everything you’re likely to need for the basics: web browsing, apps and games.

The Archos 97 Carbon will be available in 7, 8 and 9.7-inch models. At £220 for a 9.7-inch model, it’s a lot cheaper than a £399 minimum spec new iPad, and just £20 more than the highest-specced 16GB Google Nexus 7.

So, what do you get for your cash? From the front, the Archos 97 Carbon looks a little like the first generation iPad with its steel border around the sides. It sports an aluminium finish, weighs 618 grams and is 11.4mm thick.

The Archos 97 Carbon runs on Android Ice Cream Sandwich, and has a 1GHz processor and 1GB of RAM. The display should be pretty handy. It’s an IPS multi-touch screen, which should make for good viewing angles and performance in bright sunlight. The device also has front and rear cameras, and can output full HD 1080p video via HDMI. Storage-wise the device comes with 16GB of storage, and a microSD card slot to expand that up to 32GB.

Those tempted will be able to pick up the Archos 97 Carbon this month. Would you choose it over the Google Nexus 7?
