YouTube movie rentals finally come to UK

image

Nothing on the telly? YouTube may have what you need – and for once you won’t be restricted to watching funny cat videos or clips of people falling off things. Google has rolled out its YouTube movie rental service in the UK for the first time.

Film fans in the US and Canada have been able to rent films via YouTube for a few months but until a few days ago http://www.youtube.com/movies only contained a selection of (mostly rubbish, to be honest) free films and shorts. Now UK viewers have a much wider selection of old and new films including the latest releases.

The freebies are still there (and you can find some classics there among the dross) but be prepared to pay either £2.49 or £3.49 for the premium selection, with the higher price reserved for new releases.

We’ve just been having a nosey around and there are some interesting topics. For example, there is a nice line in 80s retro with Weird Science, Breakfast Club and Fame (The Original) up for grabs so you can relive the VHS versus Betamax wars. Then again, if you’re slap bang up to the minute then the likes of Faster, Hanna and Priest offer something fresh and different.

Many films are available to stream directly from the site – just hook up your PC via HDMI or use the site via a set-top box like the Boxee Box to view on your TV. Where a film is not available to stream you can download a time-locked copy that will play for 48 hours.
