Starting in 2012, the shape of mobile phones could be about to change forever. From next year Samsung hopes to produce mobile phones with flexible displays. It might sound like fantasy, but flexible displays are closer than one might imagine.
The exciting, yet ambitious plans to being flexible mobile phone displays to the world were revealed by Samsung spokesman Robert Yi, who expects the production of flexible-screened gadgets to start with handsets. ”The flexible display, we are looking to introduce sometime in 2012, hopefully the earlier part,” Yi said during a recent earnings call.
Samsung is reported to be working on flexible screens for other gadgets such as portable tablet computers, with mobile phones the first to get the flexible treatment. Flexible displays may sound far off, however Samsung is not the only company eager to stretch phone screen technology to the limits.
Nokia is also developing phone-bending tech. the recent Nokia World 2011 expo saw Nokia show off a working prototype of its Kinetic display, inspired by nanotechnology that enables screens to stretch and flex.
Users will control the Kinetic devices not by tapping a touchscreen, but by bending and twisting the device to adjust volume, zoom in and do plenty more. Nokia hopes that its own Kinetic displays will reach the market in around two years.
