The BBC is getting ready to launch the latest version of the dedicated BBC catch up service, iPlayer to a ray of smart televisions and set top boxes and it looks blooming beautiful.

iPlayer started off initially designed just for the web and has greatly evolved since the 2007 release date into something so much bigger now available on set-top boxes, smart televisions, smartphones, tablets and game consoles.

Daniel Danker, general manager of programmes and on demand at the BBC told TechRadar that the latest edition of iPlayer was from the very start designed for the big screen. He adds,

"I don't want to criticise an older project that has been so successful, but we have gone back to first principles and designed this to be watched on televisions."

New features loaded in the latest iPlayer are a new simpler UI, improved search, grouped programmes plus favourites so you never miss another episode of EastEnders again!

The BBC plans to roll out the new HTML5 version of iPlayer to plenty of televisions and set-top boxes as soon as possible.
