Sony S1 becomes Sony Tablet S for mid-September launch

Sony will release its first Android tablet, the Tablet S in the middle of next month. Sure, we love our Apple iPad but this Android tablet has all the hallmarks of being the one to steal the thunder from Apple.

Sony has been developing two Android tablets of different sizes. The larger of the two, which was code-named the S1 during development, is now set for release in a couple of weeks time. Now renamed the Tablet S, the 9.4 inch device will run Android 3.1 (Honeycomb) and have a 1280×768 screen resolution. The tablet looks roughly similar to the iPad, but Sony appear to be aiming the device at the home multimedia crowd, with the ability to control compatible devices around the home using a built-in infra red remote.

As well as its own multimedia support, the Tablet S will have the ability to ‘throw’ movies, music and pictures to compatible devices using DNLA so you easily transfer a video to your DNLA-supporting TV and carry on watching on a bigger screen or just use it to show off your holiday snaps. The Tablet S will be compatible with Sony’s Reader ebook formats, with a custom app able to display any books purchased for the stand-alone e-ink device.

If you want to try video chat using Skype or similar apps then the Tablet S has a 3-megapixel front facing camera to o with the 5 megapixel snapper at the back for use as a slightly awkward digital camera. You will also be able to connect a wireless keyboard and other peripherals via Bluetooth or dock the tablet with some as yet to be announced extras like a keyboard dock.

Like most of Sony’s new Android kit, the Tablet S is PlayStation Certified so you should have access to a library of great retro games and be able to see new games like Minecraft turning up for play before regular Android users. Pricing is unconfirmed but rumours suggest around $599 in the US.
