I’m out of the office today but here’s today’s daily Tech fix.
The rumours are back, and they’re picking up steam: a new report says an Amazon Kindle Fire phone is on the way next year. Should Google be scared?
The Taiwan Economic News is reporting that Amazon is preparing to launch a Kindle-branded phone by late Summer next year, with an aggressively cheap $100 to $200 pricetag – just £60 to £120. While specs aren’t forthcoming, it’s likely that Amazon will use a heavily modified version of Google’s Android OS, replacing the Play app store with its own Amazon Appstore, as it has done with its Kindle Fire line of tablets.
Amazon also sells a 4G version for the Kindle Fire HD tablet in the US with super speed downloads, so it’s not too hard to imagine it doing the same with a smartphone – especially since you can install Amazon’s Appstore on Android phones already.
