PlayStation 4 to be called Orbis, coming 2013?

The PlayStation 4 is well underway and it seems it now has a name, it will be called Orbis! What’s more it will hit the shops in 2013 in time for Christmas. That’s according to one source, which claims the PS4 will play 3D games in full high definition, not offer backwards compatibility with PS3 games and feature anti-pre-owned technology.

The “reliable source” told Kotaku that the PS4 has a working title called Orbis, and is being planned for release in time for the holiday season.

According to the report PS4 specs will feature an AMD x 64 CPU and an AMD Southern Islands GPU, and be able to display games at a resolution of up to 4096×2160 pixels. Games can be played in full 3D in full 1080p HD quality.

And apparently Sony has no intention to offer backwards compatibility. The PS4 will also combat pre-owned titles with anti-used game measures built-in. Games will be available on Blu-ray discs or as PlayStation Network download.

It sounds as if players will need to be online to boot the games up to begin with, and that second hand buyers may need to pay a fee to unlock a game’s full content. Similar claims have also been made about the next generation of Xbox console.

Select developers have been lent PS4 developer kits, and are already working on PS4 software. But for now, that’s it on the PS4, otherwise known as the PS4 Orbis.
