Toshiba Excite: “world’s thinnest” Android tablet good enough to beat iPad2?

This impossibly slim Toshiba Android Honeycomb tablet has been waiting to be released for a while, yet only now it has a name – Toshiba Excite. Toshiba says it is the “world’s thinnest, lightest tablet.”

It might be on the dainty side, but don’t be fooled. The Toshiba Excite packs quite a wallop.

The Toshiba Excite is just 7.7mm thick and weighs just 558 grams, yet manages to cram in plenty of power as well as features. Specs-wise the Toshiba Excite has a dual-core 1.2GHz Texas Instruments OMAP processor and a 10.1-inch display at 1280×800-pixel resolution.

Options include being able to purchase a 16GB and 32GB version – both with a 5-megapixel camera on the back for taking photos, and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera suitable for Skype video calls.

A microSD card slot lends more memory options. There’s also a USB port and a mini HDMI-out port on there to let you share images and video from the tablet to a HD TV by plugging it in.

A UK launch date for the aluminium-clad Toshiba Excite has yet to be confirmed, but we do know it’ll be heading to Canada come February 2012. However, we can be pretty sure that once it hits these shores it won’t be known as the Excite, after all when the Toshiba Thrive was launched earlier this year it hit the UK as the rather staid Toshiba AT-100.

Toshiba doesn’t appear to have listed a price on its site just yet, but with the current Toshiba Thrive available for $379 (£242), expect the Toshiba Excite to cost slightly more once it hits the shelves.
