The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play hasn’t been the sales success many were predicting, but Christmas has come early for the Android gaming handset with news that FIFA 12 and a host of other top titles are being dished up to Xperia Play owners completely free for a limited time.

Sony Ericsson has struck a deal with EA Games to bring FIFA 12, Dead Space, Battlefield, Bad Company 2, Need for Speed Shift and Hot Pursuit to Android for the first time, with the so-called PlayStation Phone getting exclusivity for the time being ahead of a wider Android release.

“This year, we’ve partnered with EA to bring some of its best titles to Xperia Play for an unmatched mobile gaming experience,” Sony Ericsson head of content and strategy head Tim Harrison announced.

“FIFA is a huge franchise that appeals to football fans around the world and a real highlight in a successful autumn and holiday season of bringing great content to the Xperia Play.”

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play was officially announced in February after years of rumours, but has failed to sell in significant numbers – not helped by the fact that Sony announced its own PS Vita next-generation handheld soon after.

Will a bunch of free games be enough to turn things around? Probably not, but it’s good news all the same.
