Microsoft’s tablet ambitions might only be realised once Windows 8 finally touches down in the second half of next year, but it looks like its Microsoft Office suite might be getting some tablet action considerably sooner.
According to the iPad-only newspaper The Daily, Microsoft is working on dedicated Word, Excel and PowerPoint apps for the Apple tablet, and aims to offer them at a similar price to Apple’s own iWork programs, which come in at £6.99 apiece on the Apple iPad.
The Daily reckons the apps will be fully compatible with Microsoft’s cloud-based Office 365 setup, and is expected to land on the iPad sometime around mid-2012, ahead of the equivalent suite for Windows 8, Microsoft’s own tablet-friendly OS.
The Apple iPad was designed as a purely consumer device, but has seen surprisingly strong uptake in the business sector, a situation that looks only likely to strengthen between now and Microsoft finally getting Windows 8 out the door in the second half of next year.
