A massive BBC archive is planned for next year

The BBC have been busy digitising over 4,500 copies of the Radio Times as part of the BBC Genome project to launch an open database next year listing every television show broadcasted in the UK.

This project mixes together listings from the Radio Times an their own iPlayer data.

Around 4,500 copies of the TV listings magazine have been scanned by the BBC with iPlayer assisting with the rest of the data post-2009.

It equates to five million programmes in total made by over 8 million contributors topping the current archive listing only one million television shows.

Can you help?

A special software has been used to assist in this task although they are still behind time in creating a massive archive of every television programme to be broadcast.

The BBC hope that by the end of next year the online database will be finished giving us access to old television broadcasts, photos and other information.

The corporation are asking members of the public to help out by looking for old videos and recordings for missing places although as hard as we try a lot of programmes will not be available due to be being broadcasted in the pre-digital television recorder generation.

Helen Papadopoulous, Project Manager said:

"Part of it is to recover some of the lost programmes but it's really about having a comprehensive history of the BBC and its schedules."
