New iPad mini incoming: Is a Retina Display on the way?

I’m out of the office today but here’s today’s daily Tech fix.

Apple’s iPad mini was one of the very best gadgets of 2012, but it looks set to get even better. Screen maker Sharp is working on a next-gen iPad mini right now: will it pack a pixel-stuffed, super sharp Retina Display?

A new report out of the East today says that Sharp is “working on panel technology for Apple’s next-generation iPad and iPad mini products”. Apple’s tricked out larger iPad is already too sharp to spot the pixels, but if this is true, it could mean Apples’ iPad mini is about to get the Retina Display treatment of the iPad and iPhone 5.

While we raved about the iPad mini in our review, we did point out that its low resolution 1024×768 screen meant text looked a tad blurry, and images less than crisp – especially compared to the gorgeous display on the similarly sized Nook HD from Barnes & Noble.

If Apple can ramp up the screen quality while keeping the size – and the price – it’s hard to see how its rivals will be able to keep up. We’ll be keeping an eye out for more details on the new iPad mini
