SIM deal or no deal for Nokia's whopping 41-megapixel cameraphone!

SIM deal or no deal for Nokia's whopping 41-megapixel cameraphone!

Want a Nokia 808 PureView? It looks like you’ll have to go SIM-free to get hold of one. The 41-megapixel cameraphone is being shunned by UK networks. O2, T-Mobile, Orange and Vodafone are all refusing to offer the phone to its customers. And it looks like its Symbian Belle operating system is to blame. Who’d buy one now?

O2, Vodafone, T-Mobile and Orange told Wired UK that they will not be offering the Nokia 808 PureView to its customers. While none of the networks clarified why, Wired UK has been told that O2 is disappointed in the phone’s outdated operating system.

Instead O2 said that it’s “continuing to work with Nokia on future products.” It’s likely that O2, among others are waiting for the PureView technology to make its way into a future Nokia Lumia Windows Phone device.

Nokia US president Chris Webb recently confirmed, saying “You can expect we’ll be bringing PureView technologies to the Windows Phone platform and Lumia devices.” Webb went on to say that Nokia is “absolutely committed to doing that.”

Whether the sensor will be the same 41-megapixel version as seen on the Nokia 808 PureView has yet to be confirmed. It’s likely that future sensors may be stripped down in order to keep the new devices as compact as possible, while still retaining the PureView technology.

The technology behind PureView lets users capture amazing shots on par with many digital SLR cameras, with no loss of detail up close.

Unfortunately the above means Nokia fans will need to save up for a pricey SIM-free 808 PureView. Amazon.co.uk lists the 41-megapixel cameraphone for £500. Would you buy one?
