Together with Sony, Google is bringing its Google TV service to the UK. A set-top box made by Sony called the Sony NSZ-GS7 will let users browse the web through their television, access on-demand entertainment services such as Netflix, and use Android applications when it launches this July. Sony announced the arrival of Google TV as key feature of its NSZ-GS7 Internet Player, due to arrive in stores this July, at a cost of £200. Sony says it will offer the “freedom of the web on the big screen” by being able to browse the internet using Google’s Google Chrome web browser.
Google TV will let users access sites such as YouTube at the touch of a button, browse photo-sharing websites such as Flickr, and stay in touch with friends via Facebook from their HD television, as users are able to access their favourite websites. There will be on-demand content, too, with access to entertainment and movie services such as Netflix.
The Sony NSZ-GS7 includes a dual-sided remote with a touchpad for navigating menus, skimming through email, and activating the services on offer, including voice search. If you’ve got an Android smartphone, you’ll be able to use that as a controller too, with a free Media Remote app.
In addition to the NSZ-GS7, Sony will also launch an Internet Blu-ray disc player with Google TV called the NSZ-GP9, out this October for £280.
The arrival of Google TV to the UK comes as we begin to hear rumours of an Apple TV. Not the set-top box we already know of, but an LCD Apple television set that is reportedly ready to go into production.
