Nintendo 3DS XL revealed, hits UK July 28

Nintendo has revealed its latest handheld gaming console, the Nintendo 3DS XL. The new gaming device is a larger version of the current 3DS, with a 4.88-inch screen, which is a nice 90 per cent bigger than the original, so games look even better!

The Nintendo 3DS XL gives more space to players, increasing the size of the top screen to 4.88-inches – that’s 90 per cent larger than the screen on the current Nintendo 3DS, and the largest seen on any Nintendo handheld.

The Nintendo 3DS will also be slightly heavier than the 3DS, weighing 336 grams compared to the original console’s 235 grams. The 3DS XL will gain a better battery life of between 3.5 to 6.5 hours when playing 3DS games, and up to 10 hours when playing original DS games.

Interestingly, and rather controversially, the 3DS XL will not feature a second analogue stick. The 3DS XL would need its own Circle Pad Pro accessory for that The accessory was originally released as an optional extra, to make up for the lack of the extra controls on the original model.

Its absence is unlikely to please those unwilling to fork out extra for the add-on to play games likely to benefit from it such as Resident Evil: Revelations, and Kid Icarus: Uprising.

The Nintendo 3DS XL will arrive in the US on August 19 for $199.99, and Europe from July 28 in black, blue and white.
