Samsung Galaxy Camera: Android super snapper out this week!

I’m out of the office today but here’s today’s daily Tech fix.

galaxy-camera-440_size_9We’ve not heard much about the Samsung Galaxy Camera since it was launched at IFA two months ago, but that changes today: Samsung has announced a release date for the Android-fuelled snapper – and it’s this week. Will this change mobile photography for ever?

The Samsung Galaxy Camera will go on sale in the UK on 8 November at Jessops, Phones4U and Carphone Warehouse, and a day earlier at 5pm at Samsung stores. Samsung is letting retailers set the price, but Jessops is already listing it for order online, priced up at £399.99 for both black and white models.

That’s a lot of money for a compact camera, but the Samsung Galaxy Camera is no ordinary shooter. The 16.3 megapixel snapper packs a 4.8-inch touchscreen around the back, and runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean like a phone. It also connects to the web over 3G and Wi-Fi, so you can upload all your shots straight away to Instagram, Facebook or wherever takes your fancy.

Nikon also has its own Android-powered camera on the way, but it runs a much older version of Android, 2.3 “Gingerbread”, which supports fewer apps. Of course, it could make up for this in image quality – rest assured we’ll have reviews of both to let you know. In the meantime, get stuck in in the comments below – would you buy an actual camera-phone?
