We knew Google was working on a standalone YouTube app for iOS devices ever since Apple announced YouTube would no longer be included by default in the upcoming iOS 6 software release. Now it’s finally here, sporting all new features – but not if you’ve got an iPad...
The new YouTube app is free and available for iPhone and iPod touch users today from iTunes: it’s been given a bit of a facelift and now follows similar design guidelines to Google’s Google+ iOS app.
More importantly though, it can do much more than before: all sorts of videos that were previously inaccessible can now be played on the YouTube iPhone app, including official music videos. Swipe to the side and you can browse through channels easily, while search boxes now provide drop down auto suggestions like on the YouTube desktop site. And like the Android YouTube app, you can now easily share clips to other services and apps from a pop up menu.
What’s the catch? The YouTube iOS app hasn’t been optimised for iPad yet, so while tablet owners can download it and try it out, it’ll be upscaled and will look appalling. Google says a version for iPad is due in the “coming months” – let’s hope that’s before iOS 6 rolls out and people find their YouTube fix taken from them….
