New iPod touch: Meet the Mini iPad Mini

The iPhone 5 isn’t the only new gizmo Apple has got for us today. Live on stage in San Francisco this evening, the company’s top execs revealed a brand new iPod touch with a bigger screen, brand new look, new features and even new hues!

The super thin (6.1mm) new iPod touch packs in the same longer 4-inch super sharp resolution screen as the iPhone 5 (Though it may not have quite the same viewing angles: Apple’s iPod touch 4G wasn’t quite as vivid as the iPhone 4, for instance). Inside, it’s got the same A5 processor as the iPhone 4S, and a five megapixel camera with the same panorama mode as its newer 4G brother. There are five new colours, and each comes with a notch and wristband loop for using it as a camera.

It runs iOS 6 out of the box, so you’ve got Facebook integration and much more right out of the box. To everyone’s surprise, it also runs Siri, so you can boss it about and ask it to tell you jokes.

The new iPod touch is a welcome move given Apple hasn’t updated its smart portable media player in two years now (Last year, all we got was a white fourth-gen iPod touch), although the increased size does have us wondering. How much difference will there be between this and the rumoured iPad Mini, in size or in price?

The new iPod touch is out in October priced up at £249 for the entry level 16GB model. The last generation iPod touch will also remain on sale, now starting at £169.
