Mobile World Congress 2012 is in full swing this week and as the smartphone makers begin to step it up, Huawei has been showing that it can play hardball too. The Huawei Ascend D quad ups the stakes with what the company is claiming is the ‘world’s fastest’ smartphone.

The Huawei Ascend D quad is a quad-core phone that features Huawei’s own K3V2 processor running at 1.5GHz and the latest Android 4.0 operating system. Bold claims aside, the Huawei Ascend D quad is no one-trick pony, with specs to matchup with the best.

The Huawei Ascend D quad has a 4.5-inches 1280×720 resolution display that Huawei claims delivers very sharp viewing backed up by clever graphics processors to keep everything on the screen looking great. On that screen you’ll be looking at the latest Android 4.0 operating system, there from day one.

The rest of the specs appear to hold up, too. The Huawei Ascend D quad can boast an 8-megapixel camera that offers full HD (1080p) video recording, and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera for video calls.

And just like the Nokia 808 PureView, the Huawei Ascend D quad uses Dolby audio technology to boost sound quality. Improved audio is one of the trends we’re seeing with new smartphones. HTC also just launched a phone called the HTC One X with bass-boosting Beats by Dre audio built-in.

The Huawei Ascend D will be available in stores from the second quarter 2012. Watch this space for a UK release date.
