Telefonica Tu Me takes on Skype for iPhone and Android

Telefonica Tu Me takes on Skype for iPhone and Android

O2 owner Telefonica has unveiled a new app called TU Me that lets users make free calls, send free text and audio messages and photos using Wi-Fi and your phone network data instead of using up your inclusive minutes in what is sure to be direct competition to the likes of instant message service WhatsApp and Skype.

Available first as a free download for the Apple iPhone, Tu Me will work as a cloud-based service. All messages will be stored on Telefonica’s servers so as not to take up any available space on a users smartphone. In order to work both users must have the app installed, as with similar services such as WhatsApp. Unlike WhatsApp, Tu Me will let users make calls and leave messages using your phone’s data.

Tu Me features conversations that appear in a timeline format, free calls and texts anywhere, high definition sound on calls and voice messages, the ability to share photos, contacts and maps, and contact and conversation search. Pop-up notifications alert users to incoming messages when someone wants to get in touch, giving the option to launch the service to reply.
“We’ve seen the growing popularity of communication apps on smartphones but we believe we’ve gone one better with Tu Me using our knowledge and insights of how people use their devices,” said Telefonica Digital’s chief commercial officer Stephen Shurrock.

The Tu Me service has just launched on Apple’s App Store for the iPhone. An Android service is expected to follow in the near future.
