HTC Desire C: Android's new budget champion?

HTC Desire C: Android's new budget champion?

HTC’s entry-level Wildfire and its successor the Wildfire S have been a massive hit at the low end of the smartphone spectrum, delivering a blend of power, performance and value for money that has proved incredibly popular with smartphone first-timers.

And today HTC has announced the latest in the line, the Desire C, and rest assured: while the name has changed, the game remains the same – Android features and versatility at a cost that won’t break the bank.

The Desire C originally came to our attention earlier this year, and at the time seemed destined to be known as the Wildfire C. But the introduction of the HTC One series meant the Desire name was now unattached, so HTC clearly decided to give the popular label a new lease of life at the bottom end of its smartphone range.

The Desire C’s biggest drawcard is likely to be the presence of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich – the latest version of Google’s all-conquering platform. Despite having been introduced more than six months ago now, Android 4.0 has still to make its presence felt over the previous-generation Gingerbread, so having it on board – even at this stage – is a big plus.

Android’s workings will be hidden away under HTC’s Sense interface, of course, while you also get the Beats Audio software on board, though no premium headphones.

As for the hardware, it’s very much an evolution of the Wildfire S, and comes with a 3.5in WVGA touchscreen, 5-megapixel camera, a 600MHz processor and 4GB of internal storage (plus 25GB of cloud storage space via DropBox).

The HTC Desire C will be available from all the leading networks next month, and is expected to go for around £15 per month on contract, or £170 on pre-pay.
