Smart camera madness: Android-powered Polaroid DSLR killer on the way!

I’m out of the office today but here’s today’s daily Tech fix.

Photography giant Polaroid is bringing another Android-powered digital camera to CES, but this time, it’s a mirrorless, interchangeable-lens camera that looks even better than the company’s last attempt. Is this the world’s first smart DLSR-slayer?

According to Imaging Resource, Polaroid CEO Scott Hardy says that the new device will be on show next month at the CES gadget expo in Las Vegas, and according to specs spotted in a trade magazine, the mirrorless point-and-shoot will contain an impressive 18.1-megapixel sensor, a 3.5-inch touchscreen, built-in Wi-Fi and will run Android 4.0.

Strikingly similar to the Nikon 1 J2, the camera looks like it has a solid metal design, but whether or not it can share lenses with the 1 series is yet to be seen. While we’ve seen several Android-powered cameras in the last year, from the likes of Samsung and Nikon, they’ve all been compact cameras. Mirrorless cameras are closer to pro-worthy DSLR cameras, with interchangeable lenses you can buy and switch on the fly, as well as larger image sensors for better image quality – but substantially smaller.

Is this Polaroid shooter going to be the ultimate Instagram camera, or do you just fancy playing Angry Birds during a photo shoot? Sound off in the comments and let us know your thoughts.
